The next Valentine's Day DIY project is nail & yarn artwork. I also made this for my boyfriend, Mark, as a gift. Mark and I met at Syracuse University. For this project, I created an outline of New York State in nails, and made a heart around the city of Syracuse, so signify how we fell in love there!
What you'll need:
- Piece of wood
- Paint/Primer for the wood
- Hammer and nails
- Embroidery thread
- Map, or print out of the state/shape of your choice
Here are the steps!
1. Sand down the edges and surface of the piece of wood. Then, paint it. Consider priming the surface before you paint as well. Let dry!
2. Take the map, and put it in the center of the wood. You can either draw with light pencil around the edge of the map, or you can use the map itself as a guide and keep it on the board for the next step.
3. Hammer nails around the edge of the map. Then, make a heart around your desired area also using the hammer and nails.
4. Tie the embroidery thread around a nail to start. Then, take that thread across the state to a nail on the opposite side. Go back and forth in the middle of the state and around the heart until the thread is even across the state. This step is where these projects turn out differently. You can keep a pattern with the thread, or you can do a random pattern. Whatever you prefer! Be creative.
5. Cut out a small heart to place in the center of the heart of nails.
Here are some other examples of nail & yarn artwork. You can do a state like I did, or do a different shape such as a heart! This is a great unique, personal gift to give someone you love.
Enjoy!
